Peter Joseph Noozhumurry Varghese AO (born 1956) is an Australian diplomat and public servant. An ethnic Malayali Indian, Varghese was born in Kenya to Indian parents, and emigrated to Australia as a child. From 2005 to 2009, he was Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (ONA), an Australian government intelligence agency which reports directly to the Prime Minister of Australia.[1] Prior to this he was Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, then Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).[2] In June 2009, Varghese was appointed as Australia's High Commissioner to India, and took up the appointment in August 2009.[3]
